Sandstorm at Big Red Lighthouse

The lighthouse known as “Big Red” guards the entrance to Lake Macatawa which effectively serves as the harbor for Holland, Michigan. The lighthouse is part of Holland State Park which has its own set of sand dunes. On this day, the wind was blowing hard and created a local sandstorm.

“You can’t tell from the image, but the wind was blowing so hard that the sand in the foreground has almost completely covered the concrete path that leads to the main viewing area of Lake Michigan. Blowing sand cannot normally be seen well in pictures but by lowering the camera the path of the blowing sand partly obscures the lighthouse here and creates the desired effect. It also looks as if the lighthouse itself is being buried in sand.” – Brian Kurtz
