Exploring Guinea Prime
Female space explorer from the Planetary Survey Guild emerging from one of the glowing caves on Guinea Prime.
It’s a good thing she has this space suit on. The caves glow because of a particular kind of fungus. It was later discovered that the same spores from that novel fungus could lodge in the human lungs and make small colonies. Fibrils from the fungus colony would then spread to the circulatory system and start spreading throughout the body. You would be alerted to the fact that you were infected with it right about the time people would notice that your eyes “seemed to be glowing a bit”. But by that time, it was too late. The fungus may have grown and spread without much notice in the beginning, but once it reached sufficient size it would change behavior and start signaling to itself to begin producing large numbers of spores in an attempt to spread. Both the harvesting of biological resources and the exponential number of spores emitted would clog up human lymph systems and the liver resulting in death in 90% of all cases. Only if detected early and treated with the harsh anti-biotic lezovaoprene could a person have a chance of surviving. Only rabies virus is known to be more deadly. Colonizing outer space and be a risky business. Luckily, this woman was protected by her space suit and didn’t fall victim to the fungus.
