The Lone Cedar on Lake Michigan
Standing stalwart on a windblown rock in Lake Michigan, this lone cedar tree is unfazed by the passage of time. The driving storms can be fierce which makes this tree even more special. It is an icon of strength and perseverance much like what we find in the human spirit.
The national forests of Michigan used to be a central hub for the logging industry in the 19th century. At the same time prospectors were running out west for the gold rush, other intrepid individuals went into the cedar forests of Michigan and began to fell timber for an ever expanding nation. Cedar was used extensively at that time for cedar shake shingles and exterior siding. Praised for its natural resistant to weathering and insect infestations, it is said that significantly more “gold” was removed from Michigan than ever was taken from the hills of California.
